The Portrait Process

Rich Nelson - Self PortraitI prefer to work from life in my studio or on location. A portrait usually takes 3-6 sittings of 2-4 hours each. When that is not possible I can take photos and complete the portrait in my studio.

In our first meeting we spend some time getting to know each other by looking at examples of my work and discussing your portrait. Photos and/or sketches are made and reviewed for your input. This meeting usually takes 2-4 hours.

Once a direction is selected, I usually do a detailed charcoal drawing to establish composition and likeness. When the drawing is approved, the portrait is completed on location or in my studio. Most of my portraits are life-sized. I stretch and prime my own linen canvas, and use only traditional archival oil paint, medium, and varnish.

I am happy to consider adjustments to the finished portrait, even after delivery. I give the charcoal drawing, high quality 8x10 photos of the portrait, and a jpeg file (to email) to the client as well.

A 40% deposit is collected when the portrait is commissioned, and 60% is due when the portrait is accepted. Travel expenses, shipping, and framing are not included in the fee. I will be happy to make suggestions and/or arrangements for these if you would like.

I am always honored when someone commissions me to paint someone they love or respect. Thank you for considering me for your portrait commission.
